NUMBER 7 AND THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR

This week Mrs Randall read THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR.  We thought that she was reading it because caterpillar started with C and that was one of the letters we were doing this week but she read it because we were learning about the number 7 and we discovered that there are 7 days in a week.  We all enjoyed reading this story and we joined in as Mrs Randall read it to us.

We all made our own story board.  Mrs Randall showed us how to do it first and then we had to do it.  We had to colour in the pictures from the story, then we had to cut them out and stick them in the right order.  We also practised writing the numbers from 1 to 7 on the story board.  It was a bit tricky but we all did a great job.

FLYING KITES

This week we have been learning about the letters c and k.  To help us remember the letter k sound we made CREATIVE, COLOURFUL KITES.  We decorated a diamond shape and then we make colourful paper chain tails.  Mrs Randall used a hole punch to make a hole in the top and tied a long piece of string to it.

When our buddies came down to see us they took us out to the playground to fly our kites.  It was perfect kite flying weather, it was sunny and there was a light breeze.  We were very excited to see our kites flying.  We had the best time.  Mrs Randall took some photos of us and also made a video  to show how much fun we had.  We have kept our kites at school to put up on the ceiling of our classroom so that it looks like they are flying.  We will get to take them home before the holidays.

THE QUEST FOR THE GOLDEN LEPRECHAUN

Today our school celebrated St Patrick's Day.  We celebrated it because we are a catholic school and because a lot of people who live in Australia are descended from people who came to Australia from Ireland. To celebrate the day all the children and teachers dressed in green and we took part in the QUEST FOR THE GOLDEN LEPRECHAUN.  We were all put into groups.  Each group had children from prep to year 7.  We rotated around different activities and earnt points for our team.  The team that had the most points at the end of 7 activities won the GOLDEN LEPRECHAUN!
The teams were named after places in Ireland.  They were DUBLIN, WICKLOW, LIMERICK, DONEGAL, GALWAY, WATERFORD, CORK, KERRY, TIPPERARY, WEXFORD, TRALEE, KILLARNEY, KILKENNY AND KILDARE.
The activities we did were THE POTATO HUNT, MUSICIAL STATUES, EGG AND SPOON RACE, CORNERS, THE HOOLA HOOP GAME, NETBALL SHOOTOUT and  SOCCER SCORING.
The winning team was WICKLOW and Kyle and Ava were lucky enough to be in that team.  They got an iceblock for winning.
We all had great fun even though there could only be one winning team.

FLAT CLASSROOM PROJECT

Our class is taking part in a special project called the FLAT CLASSROOM PROJECT - BUILDING BRIDGES TO TOMORROW.  This is a global project for children in K-2.  There are about 40 classes taking part from all over the world.  Classes have been grouped together, we are grouped with The Phoenix School in MA, USA; Sparling in Alberta, Canada and Shanghai Community International School in China.  We are going to work with them to learn about how we celebrate and what the view is from our window.  The first thing we had to do was create a virtual handshake so that we could introduce ourselves to the other schools.  Here is our virtual handshake.  Mrs Randall filmed us on her ipad.  We had to decide what we were going to say and we practised it first.

READ TO YOURSELF

In class we have special time where we can read to ourselves.  Mrs Randall asks us to choose 2 books and we can sit anywhere in the room and read these books to ourselves quietly.  We have quiet music playing to help us stay on task.  We try to read quietly until the music stops, that is about 3 or 4 minutes.  We are trying to increase the amount of time that we read for.

We have a book corner in our room with lots of great books from the library and from Mrs Randall.  We also have some books that we have made in class that we can choose to read.  These ones are very popular.  We take turns using the beanbags and giant cushions. Here is our one true media slideshow.

THE LETTER "N"

This week we have been learning about the letter "N".  We read a big book about NATURE. Today we went on a nature walk around our school and collected lots of different and interesting objects from nature.  We found lots of different things like sticks, different shapes and sizes of leaves, flowers, small stones, seed and seed pods.  After we collected them we brought them back to our classroom and sorted them into different groups.  When we had shared how we sorted our nature objects we made a NATURE COLLAGE.  Some people decided to draw the objects they found because they were too big to stick on to the paper.  We had lots of fun and created some great NATURE COLLAGES. Here is a smilebox slideshow of our collages.

Inside Play

We have lots of fun in Prep.  Every day we have Inside Play.  Before we start Inside Play we sit down with Mrs Randall and plan what we would like to do during our Inside Play Time.

She makes an ideas web on the board of all the things we would like to do.  We then choose from our plan the activities we would like to work on.  Some of the activities are book corner, craft/collage, computers, mobilo/block construction/lego, games and puzzles.

During inside play we work with others, solve problems and share ideas.

Our Number Books On The ipad

Every week we have been learning about a new number, we all make a page about that number to put in our class book.  After we learnt about number 2 and number 3, Mrs Randall suggested we make a book using an app on her ipad.  The name of the app was STORY KIT.  Each of us collected either 2 or 3 of the same object, we then took a photo of our objects with the ipad.  After that we recorded our voice.  We each made a page for either the number 2 book or the number 3 book.  You can listen to our books if you click on the links below.

Our First Day Of School

Our very first day of school was January 24th.  We were all very excited to start school and meet our teacher Mrs Randall.  Our mums and dads came into our room and did an activity with us.  We all listened to a story on youtube called "The Kissing Hand", then we gave our mums and dads a kiss on their hand and said goodbye.
Here is the story we listened to:

Here are some photos from our first day at school.
